  • Is there a petrol station in Xai Xai?

Yes, you can fill up with Petrol or Diesel (be sure to fill up with fuel as soon as you get there as tank stocks often run out with the influx of tourists).

Keep in mind that it's best to pay for petrol in local currency (Meticais) as it is more expensive to pay for petrol in Rands or Dollars. Petrol is more expensive the further north you travel!

No, You can drive a normal sedan car to Xai Xai and Xai Xai Beach though some of the resorts and lodges require a 4x4 to reach their property, so there is safe parking close by the resorts and lodges where you can be picked up by the resort / lodge that you are staying at. Its best to check with the lodge you're staying at and enquire if their lodge requires a 4x4 or not.

We always recommend that you do take a 4x4, because you won't be limited to exploration and you will be able to get around much easier without the possibility of getting stuck.

Yes, Xai Xai have a Shoprite, Pereira & Santos and Super Mercado. Even though Xai Xai centre does have facilities, you will find that most of the facilities and supplies are found closer to the resorts at Praia do Xai-Xai (on the beach - approximatley 10km). This includes: local food markets - seafood, popular portugese rolls, fruit, vegetables - ATM machines, banks, pharmacy's, post office, plenty of curios's / Arts & crafts to buy, pubs and a few very good seafood restaurants to dine at! Meat is scarce - vacuum pack and freeze before departure.

We also advise that you buy and take your own vacuum packed meat from South Africa for the first night or 2 (if you are going to be self catering) in a cooler box with ice so that you can ground and get to know the area. Check with the Lodge if they sell ice or if they have a freezer to store your meat during your stay.

Wenela Tidal Pool, about 2km South of Xai Xai is a natural underwater blow-hole. The tidal pool has an underwater channel going to the ocean, creating a "blow-whole" effect. This is definitely a tidal pool to see, though not to swim in!
