Jangamo Beach FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Jangamo Beach in Mozambique

  • Is there a petrol station in Jangamo Beach?

No, but there are petrol station close by and en-route like Xai Xai, Quissico, Inharrime and Lindela which is the last Petrol Station before the Jangamo / Jangamo Beach turn-off. Make sure you fill your tank in larger towns / cities like Maputo and Xai Xai as the smaller towns may run out of fuel (especially in High Season)

Keep in mind that it's best to pay for petrol in local currency (Meticais) as it is more expensive to pay for petrol in Rands or Dollars. Petrol is more expensive the further north you travel!

  • Do I need a 4x4 to get to Jangamo Beach?

(Confirm with the lodge you're staying!!) - Although a 4x4 is recommended, it is not necessary. Visitors can reach close to Jangamo Beach with an average sedan vehicle. There is safe parking approximately 2km from Jangamo Beach where you can park your vehicle during your stay in Jangamo Beach. Lodges usually offer a service where they pick up their guests from the parking zone. If you're traveling without a 4x4, please notify the lodge so that they can arrange to pick you up. A 4x4 is required from this parking zone to Jangamo Beach. The best route to take with better 4x4 road conditions is 21km North of Jangamo en-route to Inhambane, where you will see sign posts pointing right to Jangamo, Jangamo Beach & Coconut Bay.

We always recommend that you do take a 4x4, because you won't be limited to exploration and you will be able to get around much easier without the possibility of getting stuck.

Tyres should be deflated to -800 bar to be able to drive on the soft sand.

  • Is it okay to drive at night?

We advise you not to drive at night.

  • Can I hire a 4x4 in Jangamo Beach?

No, but you can Hire a 4x4 in Maputo.

Contact Euro Rent / Imperial or Expresso Rent a Car for more information.

  • Are there Banks or ATMS in Jangamo Beach?

No, but you can draw money en-route and towns nearby like Xai Xai, Maxixe and Inhambane.

Be prepared and draw more than enough money in South Africa to avoid inconveniences. Keep the money in a safe / discreet place.

  • Are there credit card facilities in Jangamo Beach?

You will have to check with the lodge that you are staying at if they have credit card facilities.

Best to check first to avoid dissapointment.

  • Is there a shopping mall or can I buy groceries in Jangamo Beach?

Yes, there is a small supermarket called Tauras on Jangamo Beach that sells all basic essentials including meat, cereals, tinned food, snack foods toileteries, alcoholic beverages and soft drinks but there are Markets that sell fresh produce, meat and fish in Inhambane. Though we advise that you purchase Fish and other Seafood from the local fisherman in Tofo and not from the Market. Pau (Portugese rolls) and other bread is sold at the local Bakery in Inhambane.

We also advise that you buy and take your own vacuum packed meat from South Africa for the first night or 2 (if you are going to be self catering) in a cooler box with ice so that you can ground and get to know the area. Check with the Lodge if they sell ice or if they have a freezer to store your meat during your stay.

  • Is Jangamo Beach a Malaria area? Do I need to take Malaria Tablets?

Yes, Mozambique as a whole is a Malaria risk Area / Country. We recommend you take precautions and visit your nearest Doctor (you now need a prescription for Malaria Tablets) to prescribe you with what's recommended.

Be prepared and take other Prophylactics like Insect Repellent sprays, Mosquito Coils, light long sleeve tops and bottoms to further prevent bites.

Mozambicans love clothes and if you have spare clothes (especially board shorts), then remember to take some with you, to trade with!
