Manica: FAQ
Below are answers to some of the questions visitors often ask when travelling to Manica.
= Very important advice / information
Is there a petrol station in Manica?
Yes, there is a Petromoc fuel station (diesel only). We suggest you fill up with fuel in Pemba though
Keep in mind that its best to pay for petrol in local currency (Meticais) as it is more expensive to pay for petrol in Rands or Dollars.
Petrol is more expensive the further north you travel!
Do I need a 4x4 to get to Manica?
No, You can drive a normal Sedan Car to Mocimboa de Praia. Road improvements went underway at the end of 2010, so there will be much less potholes than normal.
Tanzania 130km from Namoto border Manica?:
Mocimboa de Praia is one of the most Northern towns in Mozambique, close to Tanzania border. The Ruvuma River act as the Border to Tanzania where there is a ferry that takes your vehicle across the border. Be aware though the official at the border could charge a lot, like 300USD (a thumb suck amount depending what car you have). There are also make-shift "ferry's" (3 dhows tied together with wooden ramps) that the locals have created to transport vehicles across the border - A potentially dicey operation!!
Then which is the best border to go through to Tanzania?:
A new bridge has been built (2010) in Negomane Border. Go from Mocimboa de Praia to Mueda (100km), turn right at Mueda which will eventually lead you to Negomane border!
Is it okay to drive at night?
We advice you not to drive at night.
Are there Banks or ATMS in Manica?
There is a bank but we suggest that you draw a sufficient amount of cash in Pemba where there are more banks and ATMS available.
Is there a shopping mall or can I buy groceries in Manica?
Yes, there are local markets selling fresh produce and fruit. Prawns have said to be very cheap at some of the restuarants.
Is Manica a Malaria area? Do I need to take Malaria
Tablets?
Yes, Mozambique as a whole is a Malaria risk Area / Country. We recommend you take precautions and visit your nearest Doctor (you now need a prescription for Malaria Tablets) to prescribe you with whats recommended.
