Below are answers to some of the questions visitors often ask when travelling to Xai Xai.

Is there a petrol station in Xai Xai?
Yes, you can fill up with Petrol or Diesel (be sure to fill up with fuel as soon as you get there as tank stocks often run out with the influx of tourists).
Keep in mind that its best to pay for petrol in local currency (Meticais) as it is more expensive to pay for petrol in Rands or Dollars.
Petrol is more expensive the further north you travel!
Do I need a 4x4 to get to Xai Xai?
No, You can drive a normal Sedan Car to Xai Xai and Xai Xai Beach though some of the resorts and lodges require a 4x4 to reach their property, so there is safe parking close by the resorts and lodges where you can be picked up by the resort / lodge that you are staying at.
Its best to check with the lodge you're staying at and enquire if their lodge requires a 4x4 or not.
We always recommend that you do take a 4x4, because you won't be limited to exploration and you will be able to get around much easier without the possibility of getting stuck.
Tyres should be deflated to -800 bar to be able to drive on the soft sand.
Is it okay to drive at night?
We advice you not to drive at night.
Can I hire a 4x4 in Xai Xai?
No, but you can Hire a 4x4 in Maputo. Contact Euro Rent / Imperial or Expresso Rent a Car for more information.
Are there Banks or ATMS in Xai Xai?
Yes, you can draw money (local currency) in Xai Xai. Xai Xai does have a bank.
Though be prepared and draw more than enough money in South Africa to avoid inconveniences. Keep the money in a safe / discreet place.
Are there credit card facilities in Xai Xai?
You will have to check with the lodge that you are staying at if they have credit card facilities.
Best to check first to avoid dissapointment.
Is there a shopping mall or can I buy groceries in Xai Xai?
Yes, Xai Xai have a Shoprite, Pereira & Santos and Super Mercado. Even though Xai Xai centre does have facilities, you will find that most of the facilities and supplies are found closer to the resorts at Praia do Xai-Xai (on the beach - approximatley 10km).
This includes: local food markets - seafood, popular portugese rolls, fruit, vegetables - ATM machines, banks, pharmacy's, post office, plenty of curios's / Arts & crafts to buy, pubs and a few very good seafood restaurants to dine at!
Meat is scarce – vacuum pack and freeze before departure.
Is Xai Xai a Malaria area? Do I need to take Malaria Tablets?
Yes, Mozambique as a whole is a Malaria risk Area / Country. We recommend you take precautions and visit your nearest Doctor (you now need a prescription for Malaria Tablets) to prescribe you with whats recommended.
Be prepared and take other Prophylactics like Insect Repellent sprays, Mosquito Coils, light long sleeve tops and bottoms to further prevent bites.
