Cuamba Mozambique

Learn more about the coastal resort of Cuamba in Mozambique

Welcome to Cuamba the economic centre of Niassa Province situated in the North Western region of Mozambique.

A convenient stop-over and first town from the Mandimba border of Malawi

The Niassa region is well known for its scenic landscapes and garnet gemstones

Cuamba is a popular stop-over point for overland travel between Malawi and Mozambique and an important rail and road junction. The picturesque town with its dusty streets and picturesque but faded colonial buildings is best known for its railway line which runs to Nampula in the North East, the staging point for travel to the southern beaches, and up to Lichinga (the capital of the Niassa Province) in the far North, the gateway to the magnificent Lake Niassa and Malawi border.

Cuamba offers the traveller essential supplies and facilities such as a hotel, post office, car spares and cafe’s. Cuamba does have an airport, although not a major one, and no longer receives scheduled flights; an interesting landmark at the end of the runway is an abandoned military tank which serves as a lonely reminder of the Civil War.

Quick Fact:

The Portuguese East African Company named the town Cuamba in 1937. In 1952 its name was changed to Nova Freixo – in 1971 it was granted city status and, after independence in 1976, it reverted to its original Cuamba.
