Around Tofo

Tofo has proved to be one of Mozambiques most popular destinations where tourism is ever increasing through-out the years, which in return, has lead to more development and interest in the area & country!

Tofo offers scuba divers many beautiful coral reefs to explore and if you are a deepsea fishing enthusiasts – expect excellent big game fishing! Catches include: Giant Trevally, Kingfish, Bonito, King & Queen Mackeral, Springer and Kawakawa. Sailfish is popular between the months of April and August where as Marlin are popular between September and January.

Millions of coconut trees thrive In this part of the Inhambane province, so expect plenty of coconuts scattered around. If you ask kindly, staff of the lodges will crack open the coconuts for you!

The locals are very friendly here and every so often, they will walk around with items to sell including, fresh produce, pão (Portuguese rolls), prawns, fish to sell (if you use your bargaining skills correctly, you can get them for quite cheap), paintings, arts and crafts and a few other things to take home as a souvenior!

TIP: Mozambicans love clothes and if you have spare clothes (especially board shorts), then remember to take some with you, to trade with! Tofo offers some great nitelife and a few lodges usually have a pub/club effort going on for the tourist who wants to enjoy some good music and local beers with friends.

Tofo is an original fishing village, with locals still living the traditional way. Leggy chickens, pots balancing on hot coals, women with jars on their heads and hoards of excitable children; Tofo’s central craft market is worth a visit, and, if you haven’t mastered Portuguese, gestures and a smile works well for bartering.

Tofo has many smaller settlements dotted around with lots to explore. Ingenious indigenous buildings are constructed mostly out of palm. If offered, take the opportunity to try heady palm wine. Mozambiquans are welcoming people who delight in sharing their way of life, from mat weaving to chopping open a coconut with a machete and sipping the sweet milk.

Inhambane is an historical town surrounded by lush veggie patches that’s bigger than

its characterful little airport (with its bright pink loo) would have you believe. As you wander through the flourishing market – which has plenty of fish and fresh produce – shortly after landing, it is clear that this organised little town has been trading for centuries.

Everything from rip-off Havaianas to a large plastic bag of roasted cashew nuts for an impossibly low asking price are sold on market day, but the naartjies are sweet and the pawpaws are perfection with squeezed lime and chilli. Established in 1495, it’s the oldest European settlement on the east coast of Africa and has an air of faded grandeur, with some beautifully aged buildings still standing the test of time.

One of Mozambique's primary attractions is scuba diving. Tofo has 20 reefs in close proximity from which to choose, some of the more popular are Arena, Oasis and Manta Reef. In addition to seeing the diverse array of tropical fish, rays, eels, turtles and colourful coral; you stand a high chance of encountering a Whale Shark. At 12 metres, the Whale Shark is the biggest fish in the world and the pride of Mozambique's waters. A gentle character and the fact that they live close to the surface, allows a safe approach by divers - ensuring an unforgettable experience.

Whale Sharks in Mozambique

The whale shark is the biggest fish in the world; fully grown, it easily reaches 12 meters from head to toe. Despite its size, the whale shark is completely harmless, as this 14 tons giant feeds on plankton only.

They occupy the upper layers of tropical and sub-tropical waters. Without any motion, the current takes them adrift just beneath the surface, mouth wide open. Their enormous gills filter the plankton out of the water and any waste is disposed off by little parasite fish.

Their size, gentle character and the fact that they live close to the surface, allows a safe approach by humans. This experience, should you be one of the lucky ones with a mark on the 'been-there-done-it-list', is guaranteed never to be forgotten.

Casa Malcampo is surrounded by 4 surf breaks - Tofino Point is the most renowned. In fact it's the most consistent break in Mozambique and extremely photo friendly when sitting on the grassy headland next to the surfers. You're so close you could be in the water with them! On a large swell some of the locals will be towed into the massive line up. Tofino is not for beginners.

Tofo beach is the perfect venue for learning - totally protected from southerly winds, producing gentle swells in a very safe environment. Further down the beach larger waves are formed on moving sand banks.

There are waves all year round and a 20 minute trip to Barra Beach during cyclone season (Dec - Mar) can produce epic right handers that just barrel forever. It's a long walk up the beach to paddle out for the next wave.

Ocean Safaris

Tofo is one of the best places in the world to see the majestic Whaleshark. Reaching lengths of 12m, these harmless plankton feeders are the largest fish in the ocean and the prime attraction of our Ocean Safaris. They are present year round but their numbers peak in the summer months from November to March.

Divemasters give a fifteen minute safety briefing before the launch. Part of this briefing is devoted to educating our swimmers on the importance of the correct interaction between us and the Whale Sharks. There are often chances to swim with Manta Rays and Dolphins on the safari as well. And from June to November here is a chance to add whale-watching to the experience as Humpback Whales cruise the coast on their annual migration. It is an experience not to be missed for both divers and non-divers.

The Mozambique coastline is renowned for its offshore game fishing, and Tofo is at the heart of the action. The pristine, blue waters abound with king mackerel (barracuda), dorado, wahoo, various species of kingfish, bonito and yellow-fin tuna. The sailfish season peaks from June to August. Boats can be launched or chartered from Tofo beach. If it is marlin you are after, then summer is definitely the best time to visit this piece of paradise. Catch and release of all fish that will not form part of the evening meal is encouraged, as is protection of all other natural resources and the environment.

Angling from the shore can also be most productive. Small kingfish, that range between 2 to 3 kg, can be found from the rocks off Tofinho, particularly towards high tide and at deep water spots.

Group Accommodation:

Because this is a popular search and request amongst many, we have created this specific category for exactly that - group accommodation which is very much the same as our Holiday Homes category. These are establishments that can cater and accommodate for large groups of 8 people and up in the same house / unit offering most self catering facilities as if you are "home away from home".

Guest House:

Similar to a typical B&B, a Guest House is usually a private house offering very few accommodation units all within the main building structure (or some seperately). Some serve home cooked meals within their in-house dining room specially catered to seat all their guests and offer a lounge area where fellow travellers can interact, socialize and share stories.

Honeymoon / Romantic Accommodation:

Very self-explanatory. A venue will be listed under this category if they offer a specific luxury, private honeymoon suite or because our admin has "hand-picked" the establishment to be perfect for such an occasion based on their location and facilities offered. However, you are the best judge when it comes to planning that special getaway with your loved one anyway. Pssst ... and it doesn't have to be expensive either to enjoy, right?!

Other on-site facilities may include a swimming pool, gym, spa, in/outdoor entertainment area for kids, a conference / wedding room for meetings / ceremonies and a small shop.

This indicates that the establishment has a small / large restaurant on-site for their guests (they may also accept walk-ins for non-guests) or they have on-board catering staff serving guests in their own private space or in a designated dining area.

This type of establishment offers guests facilities required to cater / cook on their own terms whether it be within a holiday home for example or on communal grounds.
