Travelling tips to Vilanculos and the best route to take:

Please note that this is a river crossing border (Limpopo River). You should be able to navigate this border using a 4x4 when the riverbed is dry (during dry season - generally between July and October). Otherwise there is a dinky "ferry" service to take you across the river - but this does come at a risk which you must evaluate.

You'll then head 93km south to Mapai where you'll cross the Limpopo River once again. Follow the 423 for 392km to Mapinhane and join the EN1 north where you'll eventually turn right at Pambarra towards Vilanculos.

Note: Road conditions along the 423 is very tricky and will take you anywhere between 12 - 16 hours (weather permitting) even though Google Maps predicts a journey time of about 6½ hours - this is NOT accurate. So planning is crucial!

Fuel stations (Petromoc) along the 423 include the villages of Mapai and Mabote but they can run 'dry' during the busy holiday season, so try fill up as much as possible before crossing this border under the assumption that these stations are already 'dry' and fill up along the way if they're not.
